Action Civics For Youth Participation
This session is an exploration of "Action Civics," a project-based learning approach to civic education designed to promote deeper civic knowledge, skills and motivation in students by having them investigate and take real political action on community issues. Participants will practice democratic pedagogies and curricular approaches to Action Civics, analyzing them for future use in their classrooms and across districts.
In the current political climate, leaders and educators across the country are asking: How can schools actively prepare young people to become effective, informed and engaged citizens? Action Civics provides a framework for engaging students in positive politics, by having them identify and research local community issues that directly affect their lives, then advocate for real solutions to those issues by directly engaging decision-makers. Action Civics recognizes that, in order to learn to become effective citizens, students must get out from behind the textbook and learn civics by doing civics.
Facilitated by Generation Citizen, a leading nonprofit in the field of civic education, this workshop is designed for educators and administrators who recognize the urgency of revitalizing civic education, and are seeking innovative, student-centered ways to help young people discover their voices and feel excited to participate in the political process.
Participants will hear from a Generation Citizen teacher about a new framework for student-centered democratic classroom culture, practice pedagogies for a democratic classroom, and see Action Civics in action. They will take away a resource on how Action Civics Supports Equity in the Classroom, and tools to bring Action Civics to life in their classroom. It will additionally offer resources and suggestions for how to advocate to your district to bring Action Civics to more classrooms.
